Licensure

Effective July 1, 2006, all applicants for licensure will have had to comply with these new requirements. All social work licensing applicants must have a degree in social work to be eligible to apply for the license.

Process for applying for the limited license

  • Complete 2 page application
  • Application fee of $40.00
  • Complete Criminal Background Check & fingerprinting - $62.75 fee
  • Certification of Education form – Submit to School of Social Work, Office of Admission & Student Services.

LLMSW - Valid for 1 year and can be renewed for up to 6 years.

Initial LLBSW is valid until the next expiration date of April 30th.  It can be renewed for one year upon verification of supervision by LMSW. Can be renewed for up to 6 years.

Currently there are no continuing education requirements for those who hold the limited license.

Requirements to apply LBSW & LMSW

Under the LLBSW or LLMSW, supervised experience (4000 clock hours) earned while in a limited status and successful completion of exam is required in order to be eligible to apply for the full licenses.  You can not apply for the full license in less than a 2 year period with the limited licenses. Social Work Licensing Practice Exam- Available in the Computer Lab.,  School of Social Work, Thompson Home.  WSU alumni & students interested in taking the practice exam must contact the Computer Lab at (313) 577-5112 to set up an appointment time.  Please note the exam can take up to 4 hours to complete.  The practice exam is for use in the computer lab only and cannot be checked out of the lab.  MUST show ONECARD

In addition the WSU/SSW  – Office of Continuing Education & Professional Development typically offers a 1 day licensing preparation workshop in the fall and spring.  Approx. fee is $125.00 includes material.  See website for details and registration information at http://continuingeducation.socialwork.wayne.edu/   

Continuing Education for Social Workers- The State of Michigan requires fully licensed social workers to complete 45 hours of continuing professional education every three years.  This must include 5 (five) hours of Ethics and 1 (one) hour of Pain and Pain Symptom Management.
