The History of the School
1933-34 Wayne University was formed with the merger of the Detroit College of Medicine and Surgery, Detroit Teachers College and the College of the City of Detroit
1937 Wayne State University awarded its first Master of Social Work degree through the School of Public Affairs and Social Work
1941-42 School of Public Affairs and Social Work became a member of the American Association of Schools of Social Work
1949-50 The School of Social Work became a separate entity when the public affairs program joined the College of Liberal Arts
1956 Wayne State University becomes a state university
1950s Established a reputation as a place where social work practitioners could learn from master teachers. Social work faculty members Fritz Reidl and David Weinman authored the classic work "Why Children Hate," which was required reading by social work students across the nation. The faculty's expertise in social casework was matched by the addition of a number of noted faculty with outstanding competence in group work, among them Mary Lee Nicholson.
1960s Wayne State's School of Social Work led by Frank Zweig built a strong faculty with ties to community organizations who prepared scores of students to work in the neighborhood and community trenches , helping people to bring about social change.
1972 The B.S.W. program was approved by the Council of Social Work Education
1974 The B.S.W. program was first accredited.
2000 Phyllis Ivory Vroom, Ph.D. became the Interim Dean of the School of Social Work.
2002 In January, Phillis Ivory Vroom, Ph.D. became Dean of the School of Social Work
