Ensure that the medical, dental, vision, and psychiatric needs of children in Residential, Kids First, STEP, Foster Care, and Family Preservation Services Programs are met.



  3. Responsible for ensuring the medical, dental, vision, & psychiatric needs of students are met timely and in compliance with program and contract requirements.

  4. Oversight of student medications (ordering, refills, cancellations, transporting medications to houses timely, generating MAR sheets for each child monthly, ensuring medications needed during the school day are at schools timely).

  5. Establishing relationships with Residential staff and assisting Direct Care staff as needed to provide for the medical needs of students

      1. Maintaining relationships with physicians’ offices, dental offices, specialists’ offices and pharmacies.

  6. Address medical concerns of the Residential students

      1. Respond to and address any medical issues that arise

      2. Obtain orders for refills on medications.

      3. Arrange for drug screens, pregnancy test, STI testing when indicated.

      4. Schedule, track, document and respond to blood draw needs. Communicate with physician regarding results and follow up as needed.

  7. Documentation of all medical, dental and psychiatric services provided in the hard copy and electronic medical record Complete Discharges documentation and assist with student discharge readiness

  8. Some On-call after hours and week-ends for emergency situations

  9. Perform physical assessments on all student at admission.

  10. Administer TB skin test to students upon admission

  11. BMI tracking on all residential students monthly.

  12. Participating in weekly team meetings to provide medical information/updates and yearly trainings to direct care staff/therapists.

  13. Perform physical assessment and Drug/STI testing to students returning from AWOL.


  15. Responsible for medical clinics for Residential students and primary contact person for contracted physicians.

    1. Maintain a system of scheduling initial and periodic well child exams for all students in Residential, Kids First, and STEP in compliance with contract and policy guidelines

    2. Prep for medical clinics

    3. Primarily responsible for the flow at medical clinics and providing assistance as needed to contracted physicians

    4. Respond to physician orders regarding prescribed medications, referrals, labs and follow up appointments

  16. Documentation in hard copy and electronic medical record following for each student following medical appointments (including PT, Dental, Vision)


  18. Placement health screens on all children new to foster care within 24 hours of placement, or on the next business day if placement occurs on a weekend.

  19. Coordinate with social workers & support staff to ensure children receive timely well-child exams & any other medically necessary care.

  20. Review PCP records for foster children, summarize for electronic health record.

  21. Follow up on referrals.

  22. Update electronic medical record with medications prescribed, medical conditions, names & contact info of medical specialty providers.

  23. Ensure timeliness of immunizations. Help birth parents understand medical problems or challenges their children may be facing & help with problem solving solutions ( e.g. stubborn head lice)

  24. Assist social workers & foster parents with understanding particular medical needs of medically fragile children in foster care.

  25. Present to potential foster parents (@ PRIDE trainings) information on medical services, safe medication management, BBP, basic first aid.

  26. Provide regular medical information for foster parent newsletter.


  28. Responsible for weekly psychiatric clinic and primary contact person for contracted child psychiatrist.

    1. Maintain a system of scheduling initial psychiatric assessments and medication reviews for all the residential students

    2. Prep for psychiatric clinic.

    3. Primarily responsible for the flow during psychiatric clinics and providing assistance as necessary to contracted child psychiatrist

  29. Documentation in hard copy and electronic medical record for each student following psychiatric appointments

  30. Ensure Psychotropic Medication Consents are signed and updated annually for each psychotropic medication prescribed for each child.

  31. Track & monitor appropriate use of controlled substance prescriptions.

  32. Assist caseworkers & families with any questions/problems their children are having pertaining to their psychiatric care. Good working knowledge of frequently used psychotropic medications, their common risks & benefits, & recognition of dangerous symptoms. Provide education on psychotropic meds & common side effects as requested.


  34. Assist with CPR/First Aid Certification training to staff (as assigned)

  35. Provide staff training regarding Blood Borne Pathogens, Universal Precautions and Basic First Aid

  36. Provide support and training to Residential Direct Care staff as needed to enhance their skills in providing daily care for students with specific conditions (example: diabetes care, seizure disorders, hemophilia, HIV and/or Hepatitis positive students, etc.)

  37. Provide Medication Administration training to Residential Direct Care staff Provide Nutritional/Wellness education to Residential staff

  38. Educate staff on monthly medication errors.

  39. Present at new employee orientation information about Agency medical services. Administer TB tests for Residential Staff and students.

  40. Provide support and training to Foster Parents during Foster Parent Training Sessions


  42. Achieve annual performance objectives

  43. Consistently meet timeframes as established by contractual agreements

  44. Maintain required number of CEU’s for continued licensure by the State of Michigan.

  45. Participate in 24 hours of relevant training annually.(NOTE: most training will be provided by the Agency on-site)


  47. Ability to communicate verbally and effectively to exchange information with coworkers, peers, the community, and others involved in your position.

  48. Ability to maintain a stationary position for extended periods of time.

  49. Ability to determine and assess job related documents and visually utilize Agency equipment.

  50. Ability to physically handle and perform job related functions, including the operation of Agency equipment. To be physically mobile with working with students to include the ability to physically position oneself to effectively interact with students. .

  51. Ability to ascend/descend stairs safely and successfully.

  52. Ability to lift and transport 40lbs.


  54. Educational requirements are graduation from an accredited nursing program. Current licensure with State of Michigan (RN, LPN)

  55. Minimum of 3 years related experience.

  56. Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  57. Excellent computer skills (Microsoft word, excel, electronic health record)

  58. Ability to work autonomously, yet as an integral part of a team

  59. Ability to work in a fast paced, varied environment

  60. Ability to use evidence-based practice to make sound clinical nursing judgment.

  61. Valid driver’s license and adequate insurance on vehicle.

  62. Ability to work with a variety of people both within and outside the Agency and must promote a positive image for the Agency in the community and in relationship with other agencies and their personnel.
