Description: Under the supervision of a Mental Health Program Director and Program Coordinator and guidance of the lead clinician, peer support specialists assist consumers in accessing community resources, support consumers in developing recovery plans and provide education on recovery from mental illness and substance use. Peer support specialists advocate for and enhance acceptance of individuals with mental illness in the workplace, family and community. Services are primarily provided with consumers in their homes and in the community. Peer support specialist must function well as part of a team.

Duties: Part-time (up to 16 hours/week) position as peer support specialist for adults with serious mental illness and co-occurring substance use disorders. Under the guidance of lead clinician, a peer support specialist shares their own recovery experience and provides supportive community services such as assisting and teaching a consumer to obtain housing, employment, medical care, transportation, recreation, financial benefits and other available entitlements. Work occurs in office, home and community settings.

Qualifications: Peer Support I or II: High school diploma required. Experience as a primary consumer in recovery from substance use or co-occurring disorder required; minimum two year of solid recovery from all substances required (per new state peer support training requirements). Peer Support II: Michigan DHHS training and certification as peer support specialist. Some evening or weekend hours may be required. EXPERIENCE: Some knowledge of the substance abuse and community recovery resources required. Ability to work as part of a team of professionals required. Ability to enter data efficiently and accurately into an electronic medical record.
