ABOUT THE JOB

The after-school Youth Leader is a role model who can assist with academic support and character development of students in grades K-8. Under the supervision of the Site Director, a youth leader plans, organizes and administers special activities and implements daily activities for children relating to arts & crafts, physical activities and nutrition, STEM, character and team building exercises, and others.

The “Youth Leader” is responsible for the daily supervision of up to 15 after-school program participants grades K-8. S/he is responsible for assisting in the planning, development, and implementation of all program components and program activities in the after-school program. The leader guides the academic and social development of children; ensuring a safe, enriching, and healthy learning environment. Youth Leaders use a variety of resources, provided by the After-School Site Director to introduce new skills throughout the execution of activities. To accomplish this, Youth Leaders are required to participate in ongoing professional development and planning sessions with the After-School Site Director on a scheduled basis.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Youth Leader must have the competencies, skills, and proven leadership ability to successfully carry out the YMCA mission, goals, and visions for serving the community. The Youth Leader will be responsible for the following:

1. Ensures the safety and engagement of children in assigned group.

2. Serves as a positive role model, demonstrates professional behavior and understands positive youth development approaches to the academic and social development of youth.

3. Provides careful, attentive supervision, alert at all times.

4. Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies.

5. Maintains the overall cleanliness and appearance of the program facility.

6. Provides assistance with homework/tutoring and encourage academic progress.

7. Work closely with Site Director to plan and implement developmentally appropriate curriculum.

8. Plans and utilizes lesson plans and curriculum to facilitate purposeful and engaging activities and group projects that compliments the program’s thematic or project-based agenda according to the program components and site implementation plan.

9. Follows program lesson plans and implementation plan in a developmentally appropriate manner, meeting the individual physical, social, emotional, and intellectual needs of the participants.

10. Engages young people in activities that build character and educational preparedness.

11. Facilitates a program environment that invites exploration, promotes positive play, and welcomes children.

12. Promotes a team concept through a positive approach to supervision, communication, and interactions with others. Maintains on-going communication with supervisor.

13. Maintains accurate attendance and classroom records as assigned and according to program requirements.

14. Attends and participates in staff meetings, professional development trainings, parent/family events and other program activities as designated by supervisor.

15. Demonstrates a working knowledge of YMCA mission, purpose and goals, childcare policies and YMCA standards; ensures the program meets the highest standards of excellence.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

1. Must be at least 18 years of age or older.

2. High School Diploma or equivalent. A minimum of 1 year of college is strongly preferred. One-to-three years of experience in education, after-school programming, youth development, human services or related field is required.

3. A minimum of two years prior experience working with children under 13 years of age required.

4. Excitement and positive attitude toward working with children.

5. Commitment to the philosophy and goals of the YMCA.

6. Exceptional group management, problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.

7. Experience in creating interactive and educational/artistic activities, youth development, academic enrichment and arts.

8. Must possess oral, auditory and written communication skills appropriate for interacting with both children and adults.

9. Must be capable of implementing the daily administrative, program related, and supervisory responsibilities of an after-school site.

10. Flexibility, with the ability to adapt to changing circumstances.

11. Have the ability to work independently and in a team setting.

12. Place emphasis on quality and attention to detail.

13. Be proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).

14. Utilize efficient time management.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Ability to plan, lead and participate in all physical activities.
  • Ability to sit and stand from a seated position on the floor when interacting with children.
  • Capability to be outside participating for up to thirty minutes a day, year round.
