Job Description Summary:

The Community Engagement Coordinator is a full-time hourly position and reports directly to the Director of Real Estate Development. This position is the face of Community Housing Network (CHN) and is responsible for furthering community engagement efforts through the active participation of residents, stakeholders, and the neighborhoods surrounding CHN’s tax credit developments. The position requires exceptional communication and organizational skills, as well as the ability to simultaneously manage a large variety of tasks.

Essential Functions:

Community Revitalization

  • Develop and execute the annual community engagement plan
  • Develop and maintain a tracking system for program activities, expenses, resident and volunteer engagement, and outcomes
  • Prepare interim and final grant reports for funder(s)
  • Survey households to determine needs and concerns confronting residents of the developments and the surrounding neighborhoods
  • Design and implement new program strategies in response to resident input
  • Participate in broader community groups and meetings that support our engagement strategies and programs
  • Strengthen partnerships with organizations serving CHN developments
  • Identify and contact businesses, churches, schools, and other organizations located within and adjacent to CHN developments to develop partnerships
  • Empower residents to take an active role in community organizing and planning. This will include transferring responsibilities to active participants and recruiting new volunteers to ensure ongoing participation
  • Developing community leaders and fostering leadership development
  • Schedule and assist with the facilitation of group activities at CHN development community buildings
  • Maintain all housing development web sites and social media sites
  • Create, produce, and distribute quarterly development newsletters
  • Provide leadership to the Unity Park community garden and engage neighborhood resident volunteers to plant, and maintain the garden
  • Analyze current practices to determine their effectiveness in harnessing community support
  • Observe conditions of the CHN properties, Community Buildings, and surrounding neighborhood homes, neighborhood activity, and neighborhood infrastructure and report observations to CHN management.

Housing Development

  • Assist in planning and developing affordable housing and related programs
  • General departmental support and packaging of various grant proposals and reports as needed
  • Review, edit and format proposals in preparation for submission
  • Help coordinate and organize documentation for grants and development projects
  • Coordinate letters of support and leveraging letters
  • File and record necessary documents with appropriate governmental agencies

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Undergraduate or graduate studies in urban planning, communications, political science, public administration, sociology, or a related discipline is desired
  • Preference given to candidates with experience related to housing and/or community organization
  • Ability to work remotely from home effectively while CHN office, community, and governmental restrictions due to COVID 19 remain in place. CHN will provide appropriate technology to enable this position to be fully effective
  • Ability to accept supervision, provide input, and interact with CHN staff, development residents, and community partners while following remote work and safety guidelines
  • Strong interest in enhancing community engagement on a neighborhood scale
  • Ability to work independently and with a variety of personalities in group settings
  • Experience working effectively with diverse populations
  • Demonstrated decision making and effective communication skills
  • Must be comfortable facilitating neighborhood activities and have effective verbal and listening skills
  • Creativity and flexibility in shaping engagement efforts that are unique for each current neighborhood conditions
  • Must possess proficient computer skills including experience with Microsoft Office product suite. 
  • Access to reliable transportation, possession of a valid driver’s license, and maintenance of automobile insurance coverage that meets minimum organization requirements (100/300/100 coverage)

General

  • Seek information and remain informed on legislation, news, and trends that impact CHN’s mission, current programs, and future opportunities
  • Other duties as assigned

Physical Demands:

This position requires field assignments: canvassing door-to-door on foot and gardening under variable weather conditions.  Must be able to occasionally lift and move items weighing up to 30 pounds.
