Job Summary

 

The Center for Bioethics and Social Sciences in Medicine (CBSSM) seeks a skilled and highly self-motivated individual to support two faculty investigators in grant funded research projects. Sample projects may include, but are not limited to (prior knowledge or experience in these topic areas is not required):

  • Implementing and evaluating educational interventions and communication tools to optimize patient-provider communication and chronic kidney disease care;
  • Development and evaluation of a novel patient-centered intervention to help high-<: deductible health plan enrollees with chronic conditions better afford needed health care

*Please note that this is a term-limited position for one year, with the possibility of mansion based on the availability of funds and need. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, all work for this position that can be done remotely must be done remotely, at least through June 30, 2021. At the and of the stated term, the appointment will terminate and will not be eligible for Reduction in Force (RIF) benefits.

Responsibilities*

The Research Specialist will assist the principal investigators and research teams in planning, implementing, organizing, and reporting project activities. This position entails working on multiple projects with multiple investigators. Responsibilities include:

Project management:

  • Track project aims and progress, comparing it against project timelines and benchmarks to maintain project standards
  • Manage meeting schedules and project timelines for diverse research project teams and take detailed meeting minutes
  • Develop, refine, and prioritize the content of intervention materials, including exploring the modalities that should be used to deliver the intervention materials (e.g., paper, website, smartphone app)
  • Prepare documents for human subjects’ approval, including informed consent forms, institutional review board (IRB) applications, amendments and continuing reviews, in a timely manner and in accordance with all regulations
  • Coordinate the distribution and collection of study materials

Data collection:

  • Develop and pilot-test quantitative survey instruments
  • Develop and pilot-test qualitative interview guides
  • Assist with data collection activities, including screening, recruitment, enrollment, and retention of research participants at health clinics, online, by mail, or phone
  • Administer surveys in person, online, by mail, or phone
  • Conduct semi-structured interviews
  • Review medical records to determine patients' eligibility and abstract information to enter into a database

Data management:

  • Track research participants and maintain timely. accurate, and detailed study records, ensuring compliance with study protocol
  • Conduct data management tasks such as entering and cleaning data

Data analysis:

  • Assist with quantitative survey data analysis and interpretation of results
  • Conduct qualitative coding and analysis of interviews and/or clinic encounters

Financial management:

  • Research, recommend, and purchase equipment, supplies, and services
  • Coordinate the payment of research participants

Dissemination:

  • Assist with the dissemination of research results
  • Draft, proofread, and edit documents, including manuscript sections, presentation, and reports
  • Conduct literature searches and summarize the medical literature on specific topics, as relevant to existing grants and the development of new ones

The ideal candidate will show personal initiative in managing work assignments by organizing, independently prioritizing work, and completing tasks while meeting deadlines. The ability to work independently as well as part of a team and regularly exercise sound judgement in the execution of research protocols is a must. We are seeking candidates who fully understand the issues of confidentiality and privacy in the conduct of research. This role requires someone who can quickly build rapport with people and put others at ease. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail are required.

Required Qualifications*

REQUIRED QUAUFICATIONS (Research area specialist intermediate):

  • Bachelor's Degree in a field of social science (e.g. psychology. sociology, anthropology, social work, public health)
  • 4-5 years of human subject’s research experience
  • Previous experience or training in social science data collection methods and survey research
  • Demonstrated previous experience and proficiency in subject recruitment
  • Demonstrated previous experience and proficiency in qualitative interviewing
  • Previous experience and proficiency in collecting, managing, and conducting analysis of quantitative and qualitative research data

REQUIRED QUAUFICATIONS (Research  Area Specialist Associate):

  • Bachelor's Degree in a field of social science (e.g. psychology. sociology, anthropology, social work, public health)
  • 1-3 years of human subject’s research experience
  • Previous experience or training in social science data collection methods and survey research
  • Demonstrated previous experience and proficiency in subject recruitment
  • Previous experience and proficiency in collecting and managing quantitative and qualitative research data

Desired Qualifications*

  • Master's Degree in a field of social science (e.g. psychology, sociology, anthropology, social work, public health)
  • Previous experience with behavioral interventions and/or intervention research
  • Knowledge of user-centered design principles and best practices
  • Previous experience co-authoring manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication
  • Previous experience and proficiency using qualitative and quantitative data analysis software programs (i.e. NVivo, MAXQDA.Dedoose, SPSS, or Stata).
