General Description:
Reporting to the Behavioral Health Program Manager, Affirmations’ Mental Health
Therapist is responsible for providing direct mental health intakes, assessment, treatment
planning, and ongoing therapy, in-person and via teletherapy, to help ensure that all
community members receive affirming and affordable mental health services and
referrals. This position is expected to be a knowledgeable advocate for all members of the
LGBTQ+ community. This is a full time, salaried position ($45,000 - $50,000 per year) with
a generous benefits package, including health, dental and vision, 401k, life insurance, and
paid time off. A flexible five day work week including one weekend day is preferred, to be
agreed upon with Behavioral Health Program Manager.
Required Qualifications:
● Licensed by the State of Michigan as an LLMSW, LMSW or LPC
● Personal and/or professional experience with the LGBTQ+ community
● Excellent written, verbal, and electronic communication skills
● Availability to work some evenings
● Cultural humility and a strong, demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and
inclusion
● Understanding of how experiences of oppression affect mental health, and
knowledge of historical and ongoing institutional oppression within mental health
professions
● Understanding of and commitment to maintaining HIPAA compliance
● Comfort with learning new software tools
Preferred Qualifications:
● 1 or more years of experience post-licensure
● Competence providing mental health care to youth
● Lived and/or professional experience with Transgender, Two-Spirit, and/or
Non-Binary individuals
● Experience providing letters of support for gender affirming medical care
● Knowledgeable and experienced in trauma-informed care
● Experience providing telehealth counseling
● Familiarity with electronic health records software, especially TherapyNotes
● Familiarity with Google Suite
● Experience providing clinical supervision
Primary Responsibilities:
● Provide appropriate evidence-based mental health therapy with individuals,
couples, non-monogamous partners, groups, and families
● Work independently and with discretion as it relates to job responsibilities
● Coordinate effectively with the rest of the Behavioral Health and Affirmations staff
● Participate in individual and group clinical supervision for the benefit of self and
colleagues (if an LPC, as a supervisor for any counseling interns; if an LMSW, as a
supervisor for some MSW interns and/or LLMSWs)
● Conduct mental health intakes and biopsychosocial assessments
● Develop appropriate goal-focused, person-centered treatment plans containing
measurable goals and objectives; obtaining client and other stakeholder (guardians,
family members, payers etc.) input as appropriate
● Make referrals to care coordination program and to community resources as
needed
● Become paneled with Affirmations under different insurance providers to accept
insurance payments for providing mental health treatment
● Maintain HIPAA compliance and contribute to efforts to improve
● Respond to crisis situations at the community center and remotely
● Work with the Behavioral Health Program Manager to regularly monitor and
evaluate the program to identify and implement improvements, especially as it
relates to diversity, equity and inclusion
● Use TherapyNotes to document services provided thoroughly
● Provide occasional training related to behavioral health for the community
● Contribute to the growth of the Behavioral Health Program
● Other responsibilities and duties as assigned.
