Scholarships and Financial Aid

The 2017-2018 application for the School of Social Work private scholarships is available beginning Jan. 16, 2017. 


To encourage talented students to continue their education at Wayne State's School of Social Work, the school offers scholarships and financial aid. Private scholarships, loans, grants, fellowships and other forms of financial aid are available on a limited basis to students enrolled in the School of Social Work.


Completed applications must be submitted to the School of Social Work Office of Admission and Student Services (SSW OASS) by midnight on February 24, 2017.

All applicants must complete a Free Application For Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP). This information will be verified through the Wayne State University Financial Aid Office.  Receipt of this award is contingent upon agreement that we may inform the donor of the scholarship of your name and selected general information regarding your qualifications for this award. You must submit a copy of your thank you letter to the donor to the office of OASS and attend the annual scholarship reception.  Failure to do so will result in the rescinding of the scholarship award.

The Manuscript Competition is open to any full or part-time Social Work Students; BSW, MSW, PhD or enrolled non-degree student attending the Wayne State University School of Social Work. The award to the author of a winning manuscript is $3,000. Important dates for this year are:

Thursday, November 16, 2017, 3:00 - 4:00 pm: Kick-off for the Manuscript Competition: Attend the information session in the School of Social Work Conference Room 227 (5447 Woodward Ave., Detroit, MI 48202) to learn about the competition and hear from previous winners.

The following two deadlines must be met:

STEP 1: Registration Date - Friday, December 15, 2017, 5:00 pm EST: By this date and time, complete and submit STEP 1, the online competition Registration Form.

STEP 2: Manuscript Submission Date - Monday, March 19, 2018, 5:00 pm EST: By this date and time, complete and submit STEP 2, the online Manuscript Submission Form, which includes the uploading of the final manuscript submission. Please note that only the submission form should contain the author's identifying information, do not place your name on the manuscript submission document. All papers become the property of the School of Social Work. 

The next steps will be:

April 2018: The Brehler Scholars Committee will meet and determine the winning manuscript. All applicant/authors will be notified via email of the Committee's decision.

The winner will be announced the week of April 23, 2018. The award recipient will be formally recognized and the award will be presented at the Dean's Graduation Luncheon at the end of the Winter semester.
