Jun Sung Hong, an assistant professor at the Wayne State School of Social Work, has been awarded a 2019 Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award.

The award recipients are selected from the Marquis Who's Who in America list and demonstrate leadership, excellence and longevity within their respective industries and professions. First published in June 1899 by founder Albert Nelson Marquis, the Marquis Who's Who in America lists the biographies of noteworthy individuals who garner public interest for their achievements and contributions to society.

Hong joined the School of Social Work's faculty in 2013 and has conducted extensive research on factors associated with bias-based bullying and peer victimization of racial/ethnic minority, immigrant, LGBTQ, gender non-conforming, and juvenile justice-involved youth as well as impoverished adolescents and young adults in the United States and South Korea. In addition, Hong has conducted research on adolescents' exposure to violence. He has collaborated internationally with researchers in South Korea, Taiwan, Sweden, Brazil, and Scotland on bullying, peer victimization, poly-victimization, and maltreatment of children and adolescents.

Hong received his Ph.D. in Social Work at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign and is a past recipient of the WSU Academy of Scholars Junior Faculty Award, Fulbright research grant and the Council on Social Work Education Minority Fellowship. His research has been published in major peer-reviewed journals including the Journal of Criminal Justice, Journal of Youth & Adolescence, Journal of Interpersonal Violence, Journal of Immigrant & Minority Health, Child & Youth Care Forum, American Journal of Orthopsychiatry, Violence & Victims, Trauma, Violence & Abuse, and Youth & Society. He is an associate editor of the Journal of Child and Family Studies and co-authored a book entitled "School Bullying, Diversity, and Disparities: Investigating Youth Vulnerability, Marginalization, and Victimization."

"I was quite surprised and gratified to be selected for the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award," Hong noted. "It has been my mission to advocate for social justice on behalf of marginalized and oppressed individuals and communities through my research, which aligns with our School mission of putting social work into social action."
