Social Work Spotlight: Meet Professional Technician for Admissions and Student Services Makayla Payne
If you have ever visited the School of Social building or called our front desk, you have most likely spoken to Makayla Payne. Makayla is the first face you see when entering the School from her post in the front lobby desk. Makayla assists faculty, staff, students and visitors as the new professional technician for admissions and student services. Makayla is no stranger to the School in this new role however; she initially joined Social Work over a year ago as a student assistant while working to earn her bachelors in business. Makayla assists with event scheduling, creating and distributing the weekly Social Work student newsletter, provides technical support during virtual meetings and events, completes data collection and various other clerical duties.
What's one of the biggest mistakes you made as a student?
Not taking advantage of study groups within my classes! I was in a bunch of study groups my senior year but didn't engage with classmates as much in previous years. You never know if someone else's perspective could help you understand something you've had a hard time with.
What approach do you take to assisting students?
I always try be honest and level with students. I approach each request and scenario with an open mind, as I encounter a variety of students, faculty, staff and visitors in my job.
What is your favorite thing about your job?
The environment and the people I get to work with make every day worth it for me. I really feel like part of the Social Work Warrior Family!
Do you have any advice for incoming students?
Don't take morning classes unless you know you can be awake and present. Nothing is worse than being a zombie in class and missing a bunch of important information because you are half-asleep.
Do you have any advice for graduating students?
Always stay in contact with your former classmates and professors. Connections mean everything in navigating the competitive job market.
