DEFINITION

A skilled trained professional counselor who is able to perform and complete daily job responsibilities with efficiency and competency. This individual consistently produces quality work in the area of substance abuse counseling as set by the job responsibilities and standards of NPRC.

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Complete and pass a criminal background check and obtain clearance
  2. Minimal high school diploma with at least two years experience, bachelors degree preferred
  3. Michigan Addiction Fundamentals Examination (MAFE) or it’s equivalent the Fundamentals of Alcohol and other Drug Professional (FAODP)
  4. Certification recognized by the Michigan Certification Board of Addiction Professionals (MCBAP) in the State of Michigan as a Substance Abuse Counselor or has an approved development plan
  5. Valid state of Michigan licensure for therapist, social worker/social work technician
  6. Computer and internet basics, capable of web based navigation and data-entry
  7. Knowledgeable of County, State and Federal, TJC and/or CARF regulatory standards and guidelines
  8. Experience and training in the following areas:
    1. Individual/Group Counseling Methods and Techniques
    2. Problem Identification (co-occurring/mental health disorders)
    3. Intake Interviewing and Assessment
    4. Crisis Intervention
    5. Referral Management

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES

  1. Case Management and client scheduling on a regular basis
  2. Enters and maintains client information on a web-based data management system
  3. Maintain the confidentiality of the client and all data (PHI) associated with the client at all times
  4. Efficiently maintains and schedules the clients assigned to their caseload on a monthly basis.
  5. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  6. Maintains certification in the state of Michigan through MCBAP, (Michigan Certification Board of Professionals) and continuing education through face-to-face or online trainings, conferences, seminars, and/or workshops
  7. Monitor and review all outcomes of client’s random urine drug screens
  8. Effectively assess the client during individual sessions to obtain information which will determine their initial and continuing eligibility for recovery treatment services
  9. Effectively initiates referrals specific to individual needs and abilities
  10. Develop and sustain therapeutic interactions
  11. Maintain clinical documentation on all services rendered to clients
  12. Develop person-centered treatment plans, specific to the individual assessment/need
  13. Individualized treatment plan integration with primary care physician (PCP) and all other specialized service providers is the responsibility of the counselor
  14. Track clients’ recovery process to identify the need for treatment plan adjustment i.e. referral policy
  15. Participate in educational face-to-face or online workshops i.e. trainings, seminars and webinars to identify new techniques of resolving substance abuse.
  16. Experience the leadership of conducting group therapy sessions
