Under the leadership of Council Member Gabriela Santiago-Romero and immediate
supervision of the Chief of Staff, the Community Liaison is a full-time position that plays an
integral role in the functioning of the Community Team. As the Council Member seeks to
enhance the quality of life of the residents in Detroit, the Community Liaison forges
relationships between local government and the community through effective and sustained
outreach.
The position’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

Essential Job Functions

  • Develops key relationships and maintains regular connections with members of the community, constituents, and stakeholders to promote collaboration and solidarity
  • Assesses residents' needs and monitors trends around policy related issues, and helps build coalitions, as needed
  • Briefing the Council Member on concerns of an area and suggesting proactive courses of action related to solving problem(s)
  • Analyzes data, utilizes evaluation tools, and creates reports to measure effectiveness of office’s programming, outreach, and engagement efforts
  • Maintains communication between teams in relation to community and city projects and new initiatives that directly affect communities in District 6
  • Proactively works to develop programs that enhances participation, collaboration and educational opportunities with the community including Leadership Series and Community Advisory Coalition
  • Partners with local community leaders and advisory groups about office’s policy priorities that have significant impacts to the community
  • Develops key relationships and maintains regular contact with City Council staff and/or other City Departments
  • Participates and coordinates special projects and assists with administrative tasks
  • Helps resolve constituent cases
  • Participates in community events, which includes evenings and weekends Assists in the planning and facilitation of community outreach efforts, community events, and meetings
  • Proactively identifies new coalitions and/or external community meetings and responds accordingly
  • Keeps community informed about policy developments
  • Attends and manages general staff attendance of all external community meetings and keeps supervisors informed of any issues, updates, and/or changes
  • Other duties as assigned

Supervision

  • This position may encompass supervising interns (depending on the team’s needs and the number of intern participation). This includes, although not limited to: preparing projects, meeting with students regularly, as well as meeting with college supervisors as needed.

Ideal Candidate

  • Background in Public Policy, Political Science, Social Work, Urban Planning, or related field
  • 2-3 years of professional experience preferred
  • Bilingual is required (Spanish or Arabic)
  • Experience with community organizing
  • Strong written and verbal communications, including meeting facilitation
  • Must be comfortable with the public and/or media
  • Good time management, multi-taking, forecasting, and organizational skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, social media, project management tools
  • Ability to work independently or in a group, and prioritize tasks
  • Approaches challenges pro-actively and is solution focused with strong work ethic
  • Deep knowledge of issues impacting Detroiters and respect for diverse communities
  • A team p layer, motivated individual who is passionate about a bright future for Detroit and the wellbeing of its residents

Salary Range:
$45-$60K
Full-time
