SAPAC, the Sexual Assault Prevention and Awareness Center, offers prevention education for students, confidential support for survivors, and collaborates with others through trainings, programs, and innovative community engagement strategies to collectively create a campus free from violence.
This position provides confidential support, information, and advocacy to those at the University of Michigan who have experienced sexual assault, sexual harassment, interpersonal violence, stalking, harassment, and other forms of sexual and gender-based misconduct.
This includes crisis counseling, advising through reporting/investigation processes, referrals, and support to students, staff, faculty, and others affiliated with the University.
This position also supports SAPAC and campus efforts to create survivor supportive services through active participation and leadership in SAPAC survivor support initiatives, outreach, and training.
Advocacy and Case Management (60%)
- Provide support, crisis counseling, comprehensive case management, and advocacy for those at the University of Michigan who have experienced sexual or gender based misconduct.
- Conduct a needs assessment while providing trauma and culturally-informed services.
- Assess client suicidality and intimate partner violence lethality. When further assistance is needed in these areas, case managers will develop concrete safety plans with these clients and make necessary referrals.
- Manage confidential client requests for Supportive Measures, as outlined in the Policy on Sexual and Gender-Based Misconduct. SAPAC is the primary U-M confidential resource able to arrange for Policy defined Supportive Measures for complainants.
- Provide continuity of care as clients seek out more long-term support services.
- Utilize effective communication to guide and support students, staff, faculty, and parents, as necessary, in navigating the sexual misconduct policies, procedures, and resources.
- Coordinate appropriate, comprehensive and effective intervention and communication between multiple university offices, academic units, health care providers, and community resources to meet student health, academic, financial, housing, social, and other needs. This includes assisting with requesting Protective Orders.
- Keep accurate records for each client through Symplicity/Support & Advocacy Management (SAM) System client services software.
- Manage highly sensitive and confidential information with discretion and good judgment to maintain confidentiality in compliance with all applicable laws (i.e. Title IX, Clery, FERPA, and relevant state laws).
Provide assistance to clients in reporting sexual and gender based misconduct;
- Assist clients throughout University procedures related to the Policy on Sexual and Gender Based Misconduct.
- Assist clients in understanding their options for reporting to campus officials and law enforcement.
- Assist clients with reporting to the Equity, Civil Rights, and Title IX Office (ECRT), and/or local law enforcement and accompany clients to related meetings.
- Serve as a support person and advisor to complainants in the campus investigative resolution process.
- Serve as a support person to student complainants in the Adaptable Resolution processes.
- Assist clients in reviewing case documents and investigation reports.
Serve on-call to attend to client emergencies and after-hours consultation with ProtoCall, our crisis line provider.
- Serve as SAPAC on call to UHS and area hospitals to support University of Michigan students, staff, or faculty who are receiving assistance immediately after a sexual assault occurs as part of the community Sexual Assault Response Team (SART).
- Provide crisis response, emotional support, and trauma-informed care.
- Work collaboratively with appropriate co-responding community/institutional partners.
- Facilitate follow-up care for survivors after receiving UHS or hospital treatment.
Support the development and implementation of equitable and accessible survivor-centered programming.
- Collaborate with direct supervisor and other SAPAC staff to regularly evaluate and improve SAPAC services to ensure they effectively serve historically marginalized communities on-campus.
- Engage in-regular professional development opportunities to increase capacity to provide trauma-informed support to members of a diverse community
- Partner with the Assistant Director of Survivor Support & Advocacy to create an Advocacy Programming culture that actively seeks to engage in cultural humility, social justice accountability, and equitable support.
- Develop programming, presentations, promotional materials, and professional relationships with university offices/student groups to support the campus communities active engagement with SAPAC.
Community Education Initiatives, Outreach, and Training (15%)
- Provide community education, consultation, and training on best practices when working with survivors.
- Create resources for SAPAC’s survivor support initiatives including the website and handouts for clients.
- Provide training and consultation for 150+ SAPAC volunteers annually on survivor support initiatives.
Program Leadership and Supervision (15%)
Oversee one of the SAPAC Peer Led Support Group (PLSG) Programs which includes:
- managing search processes and hiring facilitators
- providing individual and group supervision
- professional development
- ongoing support for student staff
- overseeing community engagement initiatives
- managing the PLSG budget (approximately $12K annually)
- and collaborating with the Prevention student staff supervisors
Supervise graduate student interns and serve as a field instructor through the University of Michigan’s School of Social Work.
- This involves developing a learning plan, attending relevant trainings, and evaluating progress.
- May supervise additional student employees providing survivor support services.
Campus Collaborations and Additional Duties (10%)
- Participate in Student Life or University of Michigan committees or initiatives that support the mission of SAPAC.
- Attend weekly SAPAC staff and case management meetings.
- Attend regular individual meetings with direct supervisor.
- Assist and support SAPAC trainings and special events.
- Assist with statistical tracking and reporting that meets both institutional and legal requirements.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Master's degree Social Work, Counseling, Higher Education or in a related field
- A minimum of one year experience in providing direct client or student service, support, and/or advocacy
- Experience in providing individual support and/or advocacy to survivors of gender-based violence
- Demonstrated experience providing culturally-relevant services to survivors, particularly those that have been historically under-served by anti-violence movements
- Licensed MSW or Licensed Counselor
- At least two years of experience in providing direct client or student service, support, and/or advocacy
- Experience in providing crisis intervention and/or advocacy to survivors of gender-based violence
- Knowledge of college/university policies and protocols related to sexual misconduct/gender-based violence
- Knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations related to gender-based violence on college campuses
- Knowledge of the criminal justice, medical systems, and emerging best practices in trauma-informed care
- Demonstrated experience integrating theories of intersectionality and cultural relevance in trauma-related work
- Experience developing services and programs for historically underrepresented and under-served communities
- Ability to speak multiple language capability preferred, but not required
- Experience in on-site and remote crisis intervention in hospital and law enforcement settings

- This position entails managing the Peer Led Support Group budget of approximately $12K annually.
- This position will also receive on-call pay for time spent on the crisis line outside of regular business hours
- This position requires that the candidate be able to fulfill rotating 24 hour Crisis Line responsibilities, typically one day a week, one weekend a month, and one or two holidays a year
- This position may also require regular evening and weekend hours
- Ability to respond to outreach calls to Ann Arbor hospitals within 30 minutes.

This role may have reporting obligations under Title IX and Clery.

Posting salary range:
$54,100 - $64,900 - Salary may vary depending on qualifications, experience, and education of selected candidate.
Relocation will not be offered for this position.
