It's all about Relationships!: Early Parenting and Child Development from an Infant Mental Health Perspective (2 CEUs)

Young children need healthy early relationships in order to grow and thrive.  Parents and caregivers need support to nurture their young children.  This course will review the processes that support social-emotional development in the young child.  We will also review some of the central ways in which parents form and nurture their relationships with their young children.  For children, and parents, and communities, and social workers:  It's all about relationships!

For Infant Mental Health practitioners:

This course covers the Michigan Association for Infant Mental Health (MI-AIMH) Endorsement® competency areas of:

1. Pregnancy & Early Parenthood, and
2. Infant/Very Young Child Development & Behavior.  

While completion of this course will count toward an Endorsement® application or renewal, it may not fully satisfy a knowledge/skill area.

Course Objectives:

• Participants will be able to identify the social-emotional milestones that emerge in infancy and toddlerhood.
• Participants will be able to describe how early relationships influence the social-emotional development of infants, toddlers, and young children.
• Participants will be able to describe the social, emotional, and biological processes that contribute to the development of self-regulation in early childhood.  
• Participants will be able to describe the meaning of internal working models as they apply to processes of early parenting.
• Participants will be able to identify the emotion regulation strategies that are associated with each type of internal working model.
• Participants will be able to describe the ways in which maternal internal working models have been shown to be associated with parenting outcomes.
