Message from Dean February 2018

Dear School of Social Work Community,

I am very pleased to announce that Sheryl Kubiak has been appointed the next permanent dean of the Wayne State University School of Social Work, effective June 30, 2018.  Professor Kubiak is well-known to us inasmuch she actually began her academic career here at Wayne State, where she taught until 2006, before joining the Social Work faculty at Michigan State University.  Both of Dr. Kubiak's academic credentials (MSW and PhD in psychology) are from the University of Michigan.

Dr. Kubiak, an accomplished researcher, has studied the intersection of criminal/legal systems with behavioral health in a career that spans 30 years.  Indeed, one of her earliest research investigations involved the development and administration of a long-term residential re-entry program in Detroit for pregnant women addicted to crack cocaine. In the intervening three decades, Dr. Kubiak has received federal and state funding, as well as foundation support to research and evaluate projects such as substance abuse treatment in prisons, mental health courts, and integrated substance abuse and mental health treatment for those involved in the legal system. Currently, she is the principal investigator on a cross-site evaluation of pilot diversion programs across the state and a prison re-entry project for those with opioid addiction. In addition, Dr. Kubiak is a gubernatorial appointee to the State Of Michigan's Criminal Justice Policy Commission.

I hope you will join me in congratulating Professor Kubiak and welcoming her back to Wayne State.

Sincerely,

Jerry Brandell

Distinguished Professor and Interim Dean
