A Position Opening for the Director of Academics for Student Affairs
The Director, Academic for Student Affairs, School of Social Work provides leadership and management of the Office of Admissions and Student Services (OASS), including all personnel and processes. The director oversees enrollment management activities including recruitment, admissions, course scheduling, advising, retention, and student services. This position reports to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the School of Social Work.
Essential Functions:
Direct, plan and evaluate recruitment and admission operations for the School of Social Work campus and distance programs: B.S.W. and M.S.W., and non-degree students.
Provide admission decisions on all BSW, MSW and Non-degree applications.
Direct, plan, and provide academic advising through individual and group counseling efforts.
Supervise OASS personnel: assign and evaluate work of professional, technical and clerical personnel, conduct performance reviews and make recommendations regarding personnel actions. Make recommendations for hiring staff.
Prepare and provide reports regarding demographics, trends, retention, recruitment, probation, termination, graduation, and yield. Maintain system for followup studies of graduates.
Provide leadership in understanding current trends and practices in enrollment management, student development, recruitment and retention programs and best practices in admissions and student services. Develop and implement marketing and communication activities to enhance student recruitment.
Manage OASS budget.
Direct the School function in the area of student financial assistance and maintain liaison with the University's Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid.
Manage the School's scholarship program and chair the Scholarship Committeeþ direct the process for establishing and reviewing scholarship applications and selecting awardees.
Advise on cases of student misconduct and appeals.
Provide leadership and advisement to all School of Social Work's Student Organizationsþ including yearly leadership training through the Dean of Student Services Office, maintain roster, calendar, and provide coordination and promotion of student organization activities.
Selection and oversight of the annual NASW Southeast Michigan BSW and MSW Student of the Year award process.
Serve on University-wide task forces, committees and meetings. Attend conferences, workshops and informational development seminars to network with outside professional groups and organizations.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Masters degree required. Masters degree in social work (MSW) from Council on Social Work Education accredited program at a college or university preferred.
Experience: Ten or more years' experience in academic services administration (recruitment, admissions, and academic support services) in an institution of higher learning with at least five years' experience in a leadership role.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Excellent interpersonal, planning, and organization skills and the ability to act effectively as a team leader.
Effective administrative and supervisory skills, including skills in conducting performance evaluations, providing constructive feedback, and fostering development in academic and support staff.
Knowledge of best practices in marketing academic programs to maximize recruitment efforts.
Knowledge of enrollment management processesþ ability to assess effectiveness of admissions procedures and make changes when needed to ensure that enrollment targets are meet.
Preferred Qualifications: School of social work experience preferred.
