Position Opening for THREE Assistant/Associate Professors

To begin August 2019

The School of Social Work at Wayne State University (WSU) in Detroit, Michigan is committed to its urban mission. We invite applications for three faculty positions at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, who are outstanding candidates with focused research, exemplary teaching, and commitment to community engagement. Evidence of a beginning research trajectory, potential for external funding and some teaching experience is desirable at the Assistant Professor rank. Appointment at the rank of Associate Professor with tenure requires a strong record of research, external funding, publications, teaching and service.

Content Areas for Interested Candidates:

1. Behavioral Health and Criminal/Legal Systems; Assistant or Associate (Posting# 043859). We are interested in a dynamic leader in this area of expertise who can step into our Center for Behavioral Health and Justice; capitalizing on the ongoing research, evaluation and technical assistance currently in place across the state. Expertise in behavioral health includes mental health, substance misuse, and /or co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. Expertise in criminal/legal systems include one or more of the following: law enforcement, diversion, courts, community supervision, jails, prisons and/or reentry. We are particularly interested in recruiting a scholar whose research agenda is integrated across these two disparate systems to the extent that they can be a 'boundary spanner' in developing, implementing and evaluating interventions - at the individual and policy levels. Because the genesis of problems facing individuals involved in the justice system are multidimensional, faculty in the position will be strongly linked with Wayne State University scholars in other departments and colleges (i.e., Criminal Justice, Sociology, Psychiatry, General Medicine, Public Health).
2. Child Welfare; Assistant or Associate (Posting# 043857). Wayne State University School of Social Work has excellent relationships with Wayne County and the State of MI Department of Health and Human Services. Currently we are involved in several funded projects that provide support and technical assistance and opportunities for research. WSU is also home to the Merrill Palmer Skillman Institute for Child and Family Development - a world-renowned center of translational research - that includes an Infant Mental Health Program and Early Childhood Center. We are recruiting a scholar who has in-depth knowledge of the child welfare system, with expertise in abuse/neglect, foster care, and work force development in child welfare and/or integration of child welfare with other systems of care. Experience in management and analysis of large data sets would be advantageous.
3. Health Inequities/Healthcare Social Work; Assistant (Posting# 043858). Wayne State recently began a joint MSW and Masters of Public Health (MPH) degree program and we are excited to recruit a faculty member whose research and teaching is related to social determinants of health, health care systems, public health, environmental justice and/or epidemiology. The university and SSW are particularly interested in scholars focused on health issues pertinent to urban populations. Our campus supports a School of Medicine that partners with nationally known medical institutions and a robust research environment that includes an Integrative Biosciences Center (IBio), and a Center for Urban Responses to Environmental Stressors (CURES), fostering transdisciplinary urban health research and scholarship.

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS for all Three Positions:

An earned doctorate in social work or related field (e.g., psychology, criminal justice, sociology)

An earned MSW is preferred

A record of scholarly publications (particularly for those applying as Associate)

A track record of external funding preferred, particularly for those applying as Associate

Training/experience in intervention research and evaluation preferred

Strong analytic ability (quantitative/qualitative analysis)

Experience in primary data collection preferred

Commitment to and ability to teach within a social work curriculum

Interpersonal skills that facilitate communication and connection in diverse communities and disciplines

Teaching experience in one or more of the following areas: research methods, policy, macro practice, and human behavior.
