News and Activities February 2018

Learn more about the School of Social Work, our programs and our strengths from our own faculty and students. "WSU School of Social Work Introduction to Programs" was a yearlong project that was funded by a small grant from the WSU Humanities Center and involved Elizabeth Janks, Shantalea Johns, Takisha LaShore, Neva Nahan, Anwar Najor-Durack and Delores Dungee-Anderson. The group worked with Kelly Gottesman, faculty member in the Department of Communication, and his student, Emily Mihalik, who took the lead on creating/producing video. Watch it here

On Jan. 20, Faith Hopp was a faculty presenter on the topic of conflict resolution at the all-day "Responsible Conduct of Research" seminar for new Wayne State Ph.D. students. Training in Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) practices is a new institution-wide comprehensive training program conducted by the Graduate School and is mandatory for all new Ph.D. students and postdoctoral scholars in the 2017-2018 academic year. The Graduate School's goal is to provide training in the Core Curriculum aspects of RCR, which is then followed by discipline-specific specialized training provided by the research advisor and department.

The School of Social Work is saying goodbye to two longtime staffers who have provided exemplary service over the years. Pearl Crutcher, whose last day was Jan. 25, started working for the school as a part-time secretary around 1984.  She became the full-time field education secretary around 1988, retiring from that position around 1999.  Pearl returned to work in the Dean's Office as a professional technician and assisted with class scheduling. Pearl's retirement was celebrated with a tea party in the School of Social Work Conference Room. She plans to enjoy retirement, and is currently busy with various groups and activities with her friends and her church.

Beverly Hunter has been with the school for 28 years. She has been responsible for assisting with the planning of the Dean's Luncheon, Scholarship Awards and Career Fair, and has processed the applications for admission into the Graduate Certificate program. She sits on the Scholarship Committee and is often the first person faculty, staff, students and visitors see when they enter the building. She has helped the school create a welcoming environment. Beverly's last day is Feb. 28. She plans to travel especially to one of her favorite places, New Orleans  and to settle down in Savannah, Ga., after retirement.  The school thanks Pearl and Beverly for their dedication and service to the school and wishes them all the best in their upcoming adventures. We will miss them!
