News and Activities July 2018
On June 18-19, 130 social workers, therapists, home visitors, midwives, doctors, doulas, and lactation counselors gathered at Wayne State University for Postpartum Support International's Perinatal Mood Disorders: Components of Care two-day certificate training. Through support from Red Ventures, the Detroit Perinatal Wellness Coalition was able to provide 20 scholarships to participate in this training to professionals who serve pregnant and postpartum women in the city of Detroit, which has previously had very few medical or mental health professionals specially trained in perinatal mood disorders. Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders affect at least one in seven moms and one in 10 dads and are the most common complication of childbirth. Despite this prevalence, these parents are still highly stigmatized and services for them are lacking, especially within low-income neighborhoods.
