On March 18, Richard Smith (below left), Theodore Pride (Sociology), and Catherine Schmitt-Sands (Political Science) accepted the award for best conference paper at the Urban Affairs Association in San Diego.  The paper, “Does Spatial Assimilation Lead to Reproduction of Gentrification in the Global City?” impressed the awards committee, chaired by Kirk McClure (Urban Planning - University of Kansas), in part by showing how gentrification has increased in the past four decades while the migration of immigrants and people of color to suburbs has plateaued.

Doctoral student Caitlin Cassidy (in the Social Work-Anthropology dual-title degree program) took first place, M.S.W. student Michael Henson (also in SWAN) took second place, and doctoral student Tina Dykehouse took third place at the 2016 Wayne State University Graduate and Postdoctoral Research Symposium. A full list of student winners can be found here: https://wayne.edu/gradschool/current/research-symposium/

The National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) has selected Shantalea Johns to be one of its ten Emerging Leaders for 2016-18. Citing the large number of applications for the 2016-18 class, NACADA Executive Director Charlie Nutt told Shantalea that "the selection committee felt your application was excellent and that your involvement in this program will not only benefit you but also the association through your involvement with it." Shantalea will join the other 2016-18 Emerging Leaders at NACADA's annual conference in Atlanta in October to be welcomed and to undergo orientation.

Congratulations to B.S.W. student Keely Sopko (below, top, with Cassandra Bowers and Julie Alter-Kay) and M.S.W. student Eric Wilkins (below, bottom, with Ann Alvarez and Shirley Thomas) for being named Wayne State University’s Southeast Michigan NASW-MI Student Social Workers of the Year.  They were honored at a March 24 awards program at the University of Michigan School of Social Work.
