Dean's Message October 2018

Hello WSU SSW Community,

Organizational scholars often say that the first 90 days are often the most critical to a new leader. My first 90 days have been filled with a plethora of learning opportunities and an abundance of support. Through a series of 1:1 interviews with all full time faculty and staff, I learned a great deal about the strengths of the school, as well as areas where we can grow or improve. Through meetings with Deans from other WSU colleges and administrators across the campus, I found comradery and common challenges. Within the broader community I found organizations that have been grateful for our presence and others who are waiting for us.

Through these interactions I have had the opportunity to develop a preliminary vision and will be working closely with the faculty and staff for their input on that vision. Working with my 'Transition Team' (Jerry Brandell, Christina Dennis, Joy Ernst, Richard Smith, Joanne Sobeck and Janie Williams-White), we are drafting an updated strategic plan that will be presented to the faculty in draft form at our faculty meeting on 11/5. The strategic plan will encompass the next three years and is focused on operationalizing the 'urban mission' in how we think about areas such as student success, teaching excellence, research, diversity, community engagement, entrepreneurship,  and financial health. Faculty will have an opportunity for input and comment at this meeting and another in January.

I have only scratched the surface on understanding the depth of commitment and compassion every faculty and staff person feels about the profession and the School of Social Work. We have many challenges and opportunities ahead, but I have no doubt about the strength of this wonderful community. We will exceed all expectations!!

Sincerely,

sk
