Presentations and Media April 2018

On March 9, 2018, Suzanne Brown and Elizabeth Agius presented to the 24th Annual Professional Symposium for the Michigan Council of Nephrology Social Workers. The presentation held at St. John Inn, Plymouth highlighted "The Opioid Crisis: Scope and Impact for Social Work"  and provided data and practice information for social workers in dialysis and transplant settings.

On March 2, Associate Dean for Academics Joy Ernst presented at an International Symposium entitled "Protection Against Violence in Home Care Settings for Older Adults" in Mainz, Germany.  The symposium was sponsored by social work and law faculty from the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and the Goethe University Frankfurt.  She and other international experts on elder abuse and adult protection were invited to provide information to help set the agenda for elder abuse prevention and intervention in Germany, where adult protection issues are not addressed on the political, academic, or practical level.  She shared her expertise on Adult Protective Services in the United States with a focus on challenges in serving abused and neglected older adults in Michigan.  Joy is pictured below (right) with Marie Beaulieu, PhD, Professor of Social Work at the University of Sherbrooke in Quebec, Canada.

Tam Perry and MSW Maxwell Smith co-presented at the Water, the Environment, and a Social Just World symposium on March 29th. The 3rd annual symposium was hosted by the University at Buffalo School of Social Work.

Megan Piel was invited to present on the topic of "Optimizing Your Child Welfare Research, Practice, and Policy Network," for the Doris Duke Fellowship for the Promotion of Child Well-Being at Chapin Hall, University of Chicago, on February 15th.

Joanne Sobeck and Joanne Smith-Darden presented two posters at the First Annual Healthy Flint Research Coordinating Council - Research Symposium on March 9, 2018 in Flint. The posters presented findings from two studies:

  • Multidisciplinary Assessment of Legionnaires' Disease in Flint: There's more than Lead in the Water. Sobeck, J., Smith-Darden J., & Kernsmith, P.
  • Using a Collaborative Research Approach to Study the Legionnaires Outbreak in Flint. Sobeck, J., Smith-Darden J., Treemore-Spears, L., McElmurry, S., & Kilgore, P.

MSW Student Ashley Quinn presented a poster of her thesis research, titled " Exploring cultural competency: Michigan foster parents' perceptions of fostering cross-racially," at the WSU Graduate Student Symposium on March 6th. Ashley is pictured below (right) in front of her poster with her faculty advisor Megan Piel.
