Dean Sheryl Kubiak was a #SocialWorkWarriorInAction at the 2019 State Bar of Michigan Conference on Prisons & Corrections: Trauma and Trauma Care Before, During, and After Incarceration on June 1. Attendees heard from social workers, corrections administration, doctors and formerly incarcerated individuals on how trauma impacts people affected by the criminal justice system and what is being done about it. Dean Kubiak with a discussion on the ways in which trauma affects development & behavior across ages, races and genders. The Center for Behavioral Health and Justice and Dean Sheryl Kubiak made headlines on June 18 in the fight against the opioid crisis in Michigan. Wayne State hosted a press conference for Michigan Governor Whitmer, local leaders and community stakeholders to announce $5 million worth of grants from the Michigan Opioid Partnership (MOP), $1.5 of which will come to Wayne State. The MOP is public-private collaborative including the state of Michigan and key nonprofit funders. The Michigan Opioid Partnership's mission is to decrease Michigan opioid overdoses and deaths through prevention, treatment, harm reduction and sustained recovery. The partnership is made up of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Foundation, the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan, the Ethel and James Flinn Foundation, The Jewish Fund, the Michigan Health Endowment Fund and the Superior Health Foundation. The Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan is the administrative home for the partnership through a shared leadership model. Associate Professor Stella Resko presented on the following at the May 22 Detroit/Wayne County Opioid Learning Community Series Opioid Abuse: Developments in research and practice impacting recovery & rescue:
- recent surveys conducted on Family Impacts of Opioid Use, including stigma, loss of family members, financial impacts
- recent statewide Facebook survey on Public Perceptions of Opioid use, including knowledge of Naloxone, stigma, estimates of use opioids.
NASW Michigan, in collaboration with The Children's Center, hosted the first ever Macro Social Work Summit on May 10th. The Macro Social Work Summit featured macro social workers with expertise in social enterprise, community organizing, research and evaluation, and social policy. Wayne State had a strong #SocialWorkWarriorsInAction showing with the following presenters:
