Melanie Hinojosa

Biography

Melanie is a researcher with an interest in understanding the social determinants of health and well-being. Her research specifically seeks to understand and increase equity as it relates to the heath of individuals and families. She earned her doctoral degree in Sociology from the University of Illinois at Chicago along with a master’s degree in Sociology from the University of Central Florida. She completed a Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award postdoctoral training program (T32) at the Medical College of Wisconsin where she also earned a master’s in Epidemiology. Over the course of her career, she has published more than 50 peer-reviewed articles which have appeared in journals such as American Journal of Public Health, Child Abuse and Neglect, Maternal and Child Health Journal and PLOS One. Melanie has a strong, sustained record of research mentorship with undergraduate and graduate students traditionally underrepresented in STEM disciplines and the biomedical sciences. Outside of work, Melanie enjoys camping, hiking and traveling to National Parks across the United States.

Responsibilities

Melanie serves as Data Director at the Center for Behavioral Health and Justice. In this role she oversees the evaluation of projects that seek to prevent, deflect, or divert individuals with behavioral health challenges from the criminal legal system. Melanie oversees the use of best practices and innovative data analysis techniques to understand how community leaders can implement structural changes to address the complex issues that individuals with substance use disorders and/or mental health crises face in the criminal legal system.
