RESEARCH TECHNICIAN (Part-Time / Hourly Position)
March 2019
Hours per week: Up to 20 hrs
Hourly Rate: $15/hr to $18/hr
Start Date: April 2019
The Center for Urban Studies at Wayne State University is looking for a motivated and dynamic community organizer to lead intimate partner violence prevention education sessions as part of the Center’s Urban Advocacy Corps. Our team aims to increase community capacity for preventing intimate partner violence by hosting community conversations and promoting increased knowledge of the problem among community members and leaders.
Job Description
- Develop discussion topics aimed at deepening the understanding of roots causes of intimate partner violence.
- Recruit participants by connecting with community members, promoting the program at community gatherings or meetings, visiting neighborhood businesses, and other outreach methods.
- Schedule and coordinate training sessions at community-based sites across the city of Detroit.
- Deliver training presentations to diverse audiences, which will include neighborhood residents, members of block clubs and citizen safety patrol groups, systems personnel that intersect with survivors and perpetrators of intimate partner violence (i.e., health care professionals, teachers, police) and others.
- Practice on-going engagement with training participants to identify community allies and leaders.
- Communicate reliably, clearly and effectively with project team members and the Center's community partners.
- Maintain work plans, task lists, and project calendars on a regular basis.
- Meet goals for target number of training sessions and participants.
- Other duties as deemed necessary to support project goals.
Qualifications and Knowledge/Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in education or social service field is preferred.
- Knowledge and understanding of intimate partner violence.
- Extensive experience with public speaking.
- Outstanding communication skills; ability to present effectively to diverse groups.
- Experience in community organizing, outreach and event planning is required.
- Must be familiar with Detroit areas and neighborhoods.
- Travel throughout Detroit and surrounding communities is required.
- Must be self-motivated and able to initiate and complete tasks independently.
- Must have strong organizational and problem-resolution skills.
- Must have strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially PowerPoint.
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule including evening and weekend availability.
