Description:

Under the supervision of a Mental Health Program Director and Program Coordinator, peer support specialist is embedded in local emergency room to assess and engages people with substance abuse needs. Peer Support Specialist utilizes evidence-based practice in Project Assert and SBIRT to determine substance abuse needs and motivate engagement in recovery process. Peer Support Specialist links to local resources including Engagement Center, substance abuse treatment providers, medical care, community resources, etc. Peer support specialist may also help with mental health service engagement. Peer support specialist advocates for and enhance acceptance of individuals with substance use disorders in the workplace, family and community. Peer Support Specialist must function well as a part of a team of medical professionals. Peer Support Specialist must have strong engagement skills and a nonjudgmental approach. Regular schedule is expected to include evening and weekend hours.

Duties:

Regular full-time position as peer support specialist for adults with substance use disorders and possibly co-occurring mental illness in emergency room setting. Peer Support Specialist helps people to consider options for their personal recovery planning. Peer Support Specialist will utilize skillset in motivational interviewing and crisis intervention. Peer Support Specialist works side by side with people to obtain housing, employment, medical care, recovery supports, transportation, recreation, financial benefits and other available entitlements.

Qualifications:

Peer Support I and II: High school diploma required. Experience as a primary consumer in the mental health field required. Valid MI driver’s license required. Work schedule will consistently involve evenings and weekends. Potential work schedule is Thursday through Monday, 2 pm-10pm daily. Peer Support II: Prior Michigan DHHS training and certification as a peer support specialist/recovery coach. EXPERIENCE: Strong knowledge of the substance abuse and community recovery resources required. Ability to work as part of a team of medical professionals in a hospital setting required. Ability to enter data efficiently and accurately into an electronic medical record.
