School Social Work Course Series

The Wayne State University School of Social Work Office of Continuing Education is offering the course requirements for Temporary Approval for Michigan School Social Workers.

School social work is a specialized field of practice within the social work profession that according to NASW "acts as the connection for school, home, and community services to help children with emotional, developmental, and educational needs." School social workers work as part of interdisciplinary support teams in public and private schools, preschool programs, and in some cases social service agencies and residential centers for children. Temporary approval by the State Department of Education is required for employment as a school social worker.

Those who already have an MSW degree can take the two required courses for the recommendation for Temp Approval Full criteria to earn the recommendation for Temporary Approval

Who should take the series?

  • Those intersted in advancing their knowledge/competence in the areas of child psychopathology; diagnosis, assessment and testing; educational disabilities and their impact on children and families; and the practice of social work in educational setting.
  • Those with an MSW degree who have completed at least 500 hours of post-graduate experience with children ages 0-18 under the supervision of an LMSW social worker and are seeking temporary approval by the Michigan State Department of Education for employment as a school social worker.
  • Anyone seeking Michigan social work continuing education clock hours (CECH). 

Courses

Participants can take both courses simultanously to complete the series and earn 48 CECH or they can select to take only one course at a time and earn 24 CECH.

    • Continuing Education: 24 CECH's
    • Course dates: 05/05/2023 - 06/27/2023
    • Format: Hybrid (face-to-face and online)
    • Date/Time: Wednesdays from 5:30 - 8:00 pm EST
    • Instructor: Charlene McGunn, Ph.D
    • Cost: $550
