Suicide Assessment - Confidence to Make the Call

In this session, Scott James Smith, PhD, LMSW will discuss the most up-to-date research on the risk factors for suicide, how to assess for risk, and how to develop a plan of action.

Smith is an Associate Professor of Social Work at Oakland University. Additionally, he is a lecturer at the Oakland University/William Beaumont School of Medicine and is on staff at William Beaumont Hospital - Royal Oak's Emergency Center where he provides psychiatric assessments and support. He also serves as a contributing member of the Wayne State School of Social Work Center for Behavioral Health and Justice. As a social worker, Smith has worked in various crisis mental health roles and worked closely with law enforcement. He provides a wide range of trainings and psychological services to police agencies, fire departments, and EMS companies to both prepare them to interact with individuals experiencing mental health and substance abuse challenges as well as to address their own mental health needs.

  • Discover changes in suicidal behavior over the past 20 years to inform assessment of risk.
  • Learn evidence-based approaches to assessing suicide and determining a plan of action.

Steps to complete this course

  1. Pay for the course: The cost of the lecture with 2 Continuing Education Clock Hours (CECH) is $15. The course is open to all licensed social work practitioners. Non-Social Workers will obtain a certificate of completion. Pending a passing test score and payment in full, a CE certificate will be e-mailed to you within 7 to 10 business days.
